How can I Upgrade the Poweredge Linux Server BIOS? Do I need floppy drive or CD/DVD drives? Does anybody have a method as to how to upgrade the BIOS without a floppy drive?

Answer: You do not need them, just download the current version of bios and execute it.

Caution: Have any important file backup as usual. Never unplug power or crash the server during upgrade. You must reboot the server after upgrade.

For example, the current poweredge 1950 bios is 2.6.1.

Login to you server and download from ftp site

wget ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/PE1950_BIOS_LX_2.6.1.BIN
chmod 755 PE1950_BIOS_LX_2.6.1.BIN

Then execute the file

./PE1950_BIOS_LX_2.6.1.BIN

Can you upgrade or change BIOS? I thought its hardwired to the mother-board. Isnt it a memory writable only once?

All BIOS can be upgradable unless the OEM says about it. PCs, Laptop and server BIOS can be upgraded. Warning:There is no rollback if there are some issues! You may need to go to OEM support on this to downgrade or reset.
