Make your server more secure by:

Make your server more secure by:

1.Consider disabling the root account via SSH and setting up both password and SSL verification

2.Setup a new account with sudo access to super user

3.change the SSH port from standard port 22

4. Enable a firewall & open specific ports, In Linux the iptables is really good and sufficient. Sample iptables script is provided in this forum. Search Keyword:iptables

5. Constantly block the intruders and their ips, they are no use to you, unless you run a security service and challenge their attack! I have provided few scripts to block hackers in this forum. Search Keyword:hackers

6. Apply spam control if you have sendmail or mail enabled. You will be caught in hackers crossfire, if not.

7. Setup SSH server, sftp enabled instead of telnet and ftp. This is very important step. In this modern world computer speed, it is easy to get your password by network eavesdropping. SSH & SFTP are not easy to break.

If you own Linux/Unix servers, where do you watch out regularly?
This is the starting point of my discussion. Here you go …

Watch /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure, and root emails!

Review my pages on Hackers and use the script to block the intruders.

You can physically look at all the files or make a cronjob that will watch out entries. You can get email forwarding etc.
